Tuesday, 19 February 2008: The United States are abuzz with the possibility that a Delta and Northwest merger could be announced as soon as this week.
A report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that the Delta Air Lines board is set to meet Wednesday to consider the merger as a stock-swap deal.
While the announcement may come this week, the two carriers will have to jump quite a few hurdles in the American regulation system before the deal can be sealed.
But if achieved, the merger will create the largest airline in the world, with an employee base of 79,000 and a combined fleet of just over 700 planes.
With major hubs in Atlanta, Minneapolis and Detroit, the combined airline wont get off the ground without approval from the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
